In my wisdom I surrounded myself with sin, death, and darkness.
In everything I sought pleasure, there was a killer.
With every turn I was stabbed in the back, though I was numb to the pain.
I had grown accustomed to such treatment and saw my wounds as friends.
In my strength I hurt others and I hurt myself.
In my quiet moments loneliness filled my heart.
There was nothing in me.
Until one day, sitting in the pit I had dug, surrounded by my "friends,"
a light began to shine.
So bright at first I could not see, I was only surprised, and glad to have it near,
But as the light spread, my eyes began to open...
My friends were ugly, cruel and wicked.
My wounds were hideous, bleeding and infected.
Grime and garbage surrounded me, and the pit where I lived was dark and deep.
Then came a hand out of the light,
the hand of my Savior.
He reached for me, and I took hold.
My hand was dirty, his had was clean.
He pulled me out of all my strength-and-wisdom had gotten me.
He set my feet in a firm place.
His light was so bright.
In his kindness he showed me the things in that old pit,
he guarded me from them, and set a distaste for them deep in my heart.
He lovingly washed my wounds and bandaged me.
He took all my hurt, and my sin, and my cruelty.. he knew all about me.
He gave me clean clothes and called me by my name.
He loved me, and though (as I had learned in the pit) I pushed him away,
He drew me near again and again
(and he will never leave me).
He set a Comfort in my heart and I am not alone.
He told me of my Father and my true home.
My wisdom was folly.
My strength was nothing.
But when in weakness I came to my Lord, he gave me His Strength,
when I confessed my folly, he opened my eyes and I saw Truth.
There is nothing in me that should make such a One come near,
Nothing that should cause him to look my way.
..And yet he came, and gave me all I never had,
More than I could ever dream.
No, there is nothing in me.
But in Him there's everything.
Jesus
